Running HuBEd Applications on Your Machine
Hardware and Software Requirements
3D-HuBEd applications currently require the following environment:
- A Silicon Graphics Workstation
An Indigo2 or above is recommended.
- At least 32MB of memory
- At least 10MB of disk space in your home directory
- IRIX 5.2 and above
- Japanese GL Support (for current version)
First Steps
- Edit your mailcap file to enable the execution of "shell scripts."
- Create a subdirectory named "hubed" under your home directory.
Run the Apps
- Download the necessary files in your hubed directory
by clicking on the Download button.
- Start the application by clicking on the snapshot image.
- Delete the files when finished by clicking on the Cleanup
button.
Editing your mailcap file
3D-HuBEd uses
C-Shell scripts
to start the 3D applications. Edit your mailcap file (usually
found as ".mailcap" in your home directory) to enable the
execution of C-Shell scripts.
- Look for a file named ".mailcap" in your home directory.
If you do not have one, create one.
- Look for the following line in this file. If it is not there,
add it to the end of the file.
application/x-csh; csh -f %s
Creating The Directory
Before downloading any of the files you must create a place to put them.
Go to your home directory (hereinafter called $HOME) and
create a directory named hubed. Once it is created, you can
skip this step unless it is deleted.
% cd
% mkdir hubed
Downloading the Files
Each application has a
Download button. Click this button to get a copy of the
necessary files. When your browser asks for a file name, use the name
written next to the Download button and place it inside your
hubed directory.
Running the Application
Once the files have been downloaded, you are ready to run the
application. Click on the snapshot image of the application to start a
"shell script" (a short program) that will unpack the data files and
execute the application program. The shell script will tell you what
it is going to do and ask you if it is all right to do it. Click on
OK to let it go!
Cleaning Up
At the end of each chapter is a
cleanup button. Click this button to
erase the files you have downloaded for the chapter. This is
recommended to save your disk space.
